The iconic mid century modernist Salk Institute buildings in La Jolla CA, photographed by William Dey.
Two mirror-image rectangular buildings flank the sweeping central courtyard. Each building is six stories tall, with alternating levels of laboratory and utility space. Seeming to cling to the north and south sides of the buildings are structurally separate towers, which provide additional space for utilities, elevators and stairwells. Each laboratory block’s interior facade is home to five study towers, housing a total of 36 faculty studies with views of the Pacific Ocean and courtyard. At the west end of each building are six floors of offices with balconies, also overlooking the coastline.
